Running a good brainstorm on a whiteboard

Separate the two halves. Diverge first: generate as many ideas as possible without discussing them. Crazy 8s forces this with a timer; a mind map does it by branching outward. Converge second: cluster the sticky notes, then place clusters on the impact/effort matrix to decide what to do.

Write one idea per sticky note, in a few words. Short notes are easy to move into groups, and grouping is where the useful patterns show up. Keep the facilitator’s marker a different colour from everyone else’s so decisions stand out from raw ideas.

When you’re done, export the board as a PDF for the meeting notes, or let the AI whiteboard turn it into a written summary with action items.

Questions people ask

Are these whiteboard templates free?

Yes. Pick one and it’s drawn straight onto the board below as normal shapes, text and sticky notes, so you can move, restyle or delete any part of it.

Can I add a template to a board I already started?

Yes. Templates are placed in the middle of your current view and added alongside what’s already there. Use Replace board if you want a fresh start (it can be undone).

Which template is best for a team brainstorm?

For generating lots of ideas quickly, Crazy 8s or a mind map. For choosing between ideas afterwards, the impact/effort matrix. For reviewing finished work, the retrospective.

Can the team brainstorm on the same board live?

Not live: SketchWith has no server relaying strokes between people. Run the session by sharing your screen and adding notes as people call them out, or have each person fill in their own board and share it as an image.
