Getting a sheet that measures true
Every grid here is drawn in physical units: the PDF page is exactly 8.5 × 11 in (Letter), 210 × 297 mm (A4) or 8.5 × 14 in (Legal), and each line sits at an exact multiple of the square size. What changes the size on paper is the print dialog. Choose Actual size (Chrome, Edge, Acrobat) or set Scale 100% (Safari, macOS Preview), and check a square with a ruler on the first sheet.
The grid is centred and trimmed to whole squares, so the leftover space is shared evenly between the margins. That is why a 1/4 inch grid on Letter comes out 30 × 40 squares rather than filling the page to the edge.
Would rather not print?
Draw on the same kinds of grid in the browser with the online graph paper board: square, dot and isometric backgrounds, lines that snap to 45°, and PDF export when you’re done.
Questions people ask
Is this printable graph paper free?
Yes. Choose a grid, then download the PDF or print it directly. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many sheets you make.
How do I make sure the squares print at the right size?
In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or “100%” scale, not “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”. The PDF is built in real inches and millimetres, so at 100% a 1/4 inch square measures 1/4 inch.
Why is there a margin around the grid?
Most home and office printers cannot print to the very edge of the page, so a grid that runs off the sheet gets clipped unevenly. The grid is centred inside a margin (0.4 in by default) and always ends on a whole square.
Which graph paper size should I use?
1/4 inch (four squares per inch) is the US school standard; 5 mm is the European exercise-book standard. Use 1 cm or 1/2 inch for young children and large writing, and 1/8 inch or 2 mm for fine technical sketches.
Is the PDF a picture or real lines?
Real vector lines. The file is tiny, stays sharp at any zoom and prints crisply on any printer.
Can I draw on graph paper online instead of printing it?
Yes. Open the online graph paper board to draw with markers, shapes and snapping lines on a grid, then export the result as PDF or PNG.
